IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches
LENGTH: Two years
KEY CONTACT: Ryan Brown
COURSE CONTENT:
IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches recognises the need for analytical expertise in a world where innovation is increasingly dependent on a deep understanding of mathematics. This course includes topics that are both traditionally part of a pre-university mathematics course as well as topics that are amenable to investigation, conjecture and proof. There is a strong emphasis on the ability to construct, communicate and justify correct mathematical arguments.
The IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches course is available as a SL or HL subject and is recognised as a group 5 selection in the IBDP. HL students study the same topics as the SL, however cover greater depth and more complex requirements through their study. HL students should be comfortable in the manipulation of algebraic expressions and enjoy the recognition of patterns as well as understand the mathematical generalisation of these patterns. Students will need a sound mathematical background as they prepare for future studies in areas such as Sciences, Economics, Health, and Business.
Topics:
SL and HL
- Algebra
- Functions and equations
- Circular functions and trigonometry
- Vectors
- Statistics and probability
- Calculus
ASSESSMENT:
Students will demonstrate their understanding through assessment in the following forms:
- Externally Moderated Examination
– Paper 1
– Paper 2
– Paper 3 (HL only) - Internal Assessments, Mathematical Exploration.
- Formative learning tasks including topic tests and investigations
- Semester examinations
SUBJECT COSTS:
All IB subjects incur an examination fee in the second year of the course in order to be externally assessed. The costing system is only applied to those that undertake the final examination, there is no cost to students who undertake the course for only one of two years.
Please note, costs vary slightly due to global exchange rates.
