Information and communication technology
Aberfoyle Park High School’s core business is to ensure that our students are engaged and able to learn to a high standard. Utilising technology assists in achieving this aim. The application of ICT in education at APHS refers to an array of technologies that are applied in a variety of ways, not to a single approach. ICT is used in a diversity of ways at Aberfoyle Park High School and can be best described under three main headings:
- ICT as the focus of innovation
- Teaching and learning with ICT
- Educational management with ICT
We also have a number of high-end ICT labs which run industry standard software like Final Cut, Sibelius, Adobe and Autodesk suites.
Parents are supported through evening introductory classes and can easily check attendance and homework through our Daymap Parent Portal.
APHS has invested significantly to ensure that our ICT infrastructure can accommodate the ever-increasing technological demands of education in the 21st century. We have redesigned a number of rooms in the school to facilitate 21st century teaching and learning and these are known as our e-Learning commons. The e-Learning Commons provide flexible space, modern, adaptable furniture, access to pods of internet-enabled devices, ultra short throw data projectors, and wireless streaming devices and/or interactive whiteboards.
The school has particular strengths in the area of Information & Communication Technology and provides cutting edge development and learning opportunities for students and staff alike.
Across the school we have ultra short throw data projectors, and/or large screen TV’s, streaming devices and/or interactive whiteboards to further facilitate embedding IT into teaching and learning. We have a robust wifi network that can accommodate 1000s of devices and we have a program of continual development that keeps us future proof. In addition to our substantial and effective wireless network, we have a very strong network core that is constantly updated to be able to keep up with the high demand that our ICT rich classrooms demand.
BYOD information
BYOD device options:
- Option 1: Use the purchasing portal made available by Aberfoyle Park High School to assist families to purchase a device either upfront or through monthly payments.
https://aberfoyle.orderportal.com.au
- Option 2: Use an existing device from home that meets the minimum BYOD requirements, manufactured within the last 3 years
- Option 3: Purchase the device from an external supplier that meets the below requirements.
Minimum BYOD requirements
The following will help you in selecting and purchasing a device for your child to use while they are at school. While there are many options, there are minimum specifications required to support your child’s learning at Aberfoyle Park High School.
Device type – Windows Laptop, Notebook, MacBook
Operating system – Windows 10 or newer (except Windows in ‘S’ mode), macOS
Processor – Intel Core i3, 6th Gen or better
Memory – Minimum 8 GB
Battery – Minimum 8 hours
Wireless – 802.11n, ac or ax (must support 5 Ghz band)
Weight – No more than 2.5Kg
Storage – Minimum 256 GB solid state
Screen Size – Minimum 13″
Additional considerations:
The following are not requirements of the BYOD program, but should be strongly considered when purchasing a device:
- Hard cover protective case recommended
- Minimum 3-year warranty and insurance recommended
- USB-C port that supports charging
We have produced a printable version of these requirements that you can take with you if going to an in-person retailer, please click here.
It is necessary for students to have local-administrator privileges on their laptops, to enable them to install and use the resources they need for learning at school.
Students will not be able to use their device chargers at school. There is an expectation that students come to school with their devices fully charged for the day.
When a student enters senior school, the importance of reliable, secure IT is more critical than the earlier years of their schooling. For this reason, we recommend that when a student enters senior school, they will be working on a newly purchased laptop. An extra consideration is that many SACE exams are now conducted electronically. This means that a student’s device must have a reasonable battery life (minimum 3 hours for SACE exams), which reduces the viability of continuing to use a device that the student already has. An iPad is not suitable for senior school.
Devices that are not suitable for our environment:
- Android tablets
- Chromebooks
- iPad Minis
Power banks:
Students will be allowed to bring a fully charged power bank to school. These power banks are not to be charged at school. We recommend that these power banks are clearly labelled and easily identifiable as your child’s.
If you have any questions about the BYOD implementation, the application of the policy to your circumstances or regarding alternate device arrangements, please contact the APHS IT Helpdesk by emailing byod@aphs.sa.edu.au.
