Year 8 Health and Physical Education

COURSE CONTENT:
In Year 8 HPE students develop aspects of health and physical activity for overall health and wellbeing. Students are encouraged to be physically active, consider the benefits of physical activity, make informed choices in relation to their own and others personal health and consider changes in relationships and identities and how to manage these changes.
Topics covered include:
Health and Wellbeing A: In this unit students analyse health information and propose strategies that promote a healthy lifestyle and improved physical activity/health. They will focus on concepts such as:
- What is physical health?
- What can you control?
- Know and understand factors influencing physical health.
Health and Wellbeing B (SHINE SA): This unit which is guided by the SHINE SA curriculum will examine the age appropriate concepts of respectful and intimate relationships, gender and sexual diversity, sexual activity and the Law, love, what influences people, the transition to adulthood, safe and unsafe practices and where to get help and support. Students will have the opportunity to analyse and reflect on the influences in their lives that help them form their personal values and beliefs. They will learn about change, risk factors and various support agencies to develop strategies that can help and support themselves and others in navigating an ever-changing world. Students develop and apply skills and knowledge to make informed decisions within their own relationships and sexual health. They will develop confidence and the ability to challenge social influences where they impact negatively on health outcomes for themselves, others, and the broader community.
Games for Understanding: Students participate in activities based on invasion games, net games and striking/fielding games. Students are expected to demonstrate active participation and contribution to the team environment. They will develop sport specific skills and movements then apply and transfer various tactics and strategies. Students will develop their ability to analyse performance through offering and utilizing feedback. Students’ not only focuses on performance improvement but, the development of teamwork, leadership and fair play and the promotion of inclusion and safe participation in physical activities.
Fundamentals of Movement: This unit focuses on refining students’ essential skills and developing new, more complex skills through a variety of activities, with application in different settings. Students will explore the chronic effects of exercise on the body and various methods of training. The unit aims to enhance physical literacy, build confidence, and promote success by developing a repertoire of skills, fostering a lifelong engagement in physical activity.
ASSESSMENT:
Students are assessed based on the concepts, capabilities and dispositions of the South Australian curriculum. Assessment types include:
- Demonstrating the ability to improve performance, understand and apply skills, movements, tactics, and strategies in an inclusive and supportive way.
- Presenting assignment work in multi-modal formats.
- Analysing and reflecting on learning and performance.
- Group discussion and problem solving activities
