Year 10 Health and Physical Education

COURSE CONTENT:
During Year 10 Health and Physical Education, students build on their knowledge and experience of the interrelated aspects of Health, Lifestyle and Personal Fitness for overall health and wellbeing now and in the future. Students engage in a range of activities and sports and consider the benefits of regular sustained physical activity. Students develop their ability to become self-sufficient, and ways to sustain lifelong physical activity and a joy of movement. Students are provided with opportunities to make informed choices in relation to their personal health, and to consider responsible decision making in their choices.
Topics covered are:
Health and Wellbeing A: This unit develops students understand that health is determined by a range of factors known as the social determinants of health. They will identify personal barriers to ideal health goals and outcomes. By analysing trends relating to physical activity behaviours and understanding basic principles surrounding effective health promotion. Students will propose evidence-based solutions to declining physical activity trends.
Health and Wellbeing B (SHINE SA): This unit which is guided by the SHINE SA curriculum will examine the age appropriate concepts of what influences our opinions and thoughts, relationships, the impacts of sexual activity, power and managing risky situations and supports available. They will learn about various support systems and agencies and develop strategies that can help and support themselves and others in navigating an ever-changing world. Students develop and apply skills and knowledge to make informed decisions within their own relationships and sexual health. They will develop confidence and the ability to challenge social influences where they impact negatively on health outcomes for themselves, others, and the broader community.
Games for understanding: This unit builds on student’s experiences in previous years and provides them with the opportunity to develop more complex and specialized movements within a variety of games and sports. Students transfer and develop more complex and specialised tactical and strategical concepts across the various activities. There is a focus on inclusion, participation and students becoming more self-sufficient in the organization and delivery of lessons and technical knowledge. Students understand the role of feedback in the improvement cycle and utilize it in the acquisition and refinement of skill.
Fundamentals of movement: This unit focuses on developing self-sufficiency and peer development through inclusive participation and constructive feedback. Students will engage in a range of different physical activities including a specific focus on fitness based activities. Students will enhance their knowledge of skill acquisition and understanding of the principles of training while becoming aware of and potentially using local community facilities that support physical activity. The unit aims to help prepare students to engage in lifelong health and physical activities.
ASSESSMENT:
Students are assessed based on the concepts, capabilities and dispositions of the South Australian curriculum. Assessment types include:
- Demonstrating the ability to improve performance, understand and apply skills, movements, tactics, and strategies in an inclusive and supportive way.
- Presenting assignment work in multi-modal formats.
- Analysing and reflecting on learning and performance.
- Group discussion and problem solving activities.
- Participation and involvement in the organisation of tournaments.
