Year 7 Health and Physical Education

COURSE CONTENT:
In year 7 HPE students will develop aspects of health and physical activity for overall health and wellbeing. Students are encouraged to be physically active, consider the benefits of physical activity for regular sustained exercise, make better choices in relation to their own and others personal health and consider changes in relationships and identities and how to manage these changes.
Topics covered include:
Introduction to the outdoors: In this unit of work students will develop and apply a range of collaboration skills and decision-making skills through team building activities. They will build on their persistence and resilience via outdoor challenge-based activities. By using reflective thinking skills to learn from experiences, they will document process and outcomes and enhance their self-awareness.
Health and Wellbeing (SHINE SA): This unit which is guided by the SHINE SA curriculum will examine the age appropriate concepts of respectful relationships, identity, the importance of communication, digital safety, informed decision making, navigating the changes during puberty as well as the concept of sexual health including the process of conception, consent, and STIs. Students will have the opportunity to analyse and reflect on the influences in their lives that help them form their personal values and beliefs. They will learn about change, risk factors and various support agencies to develop strategies that can help and support themselves and others in navigating an ever-changing world. Students develop and apply skills and knowledge to make informed decisions within their own relationships and sexual health. They will develop confidence and the ability to challenge social influences where they impact negatively on health outcomes for themselves, others, and the broader community.
Game for understanding: Students will participate in a range of different sports with a focus on Game Play. Sports could include but are not limited to Tennis, Ultimate Frisbee, Tag Rugby, Softcrosse, Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball. Throughout their involvement in these physical activities students are provided with opportunity to focus on skill transfer, awareness and development of tactics and strategies within a variety of games. Students will reflect on their effectiveness and respond to feedback to improve performance.
Fundamentals of Movement: This unit focuses on developing students’ essential movement patterns such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching, through a range of enjoyable modified activities. Students will explore the short-term effects of exercise on the body, understand the purpose of warm-ups, and gain an introductory understanding of body systems. The unit aims to enhance physical literacy, build confidence, and promote success by developing a repertoire of basic skills, fostering a lifelong engagement in physical activity.
ASSESSMENT:
Students are assessed based on the concepts, capabilities and dispositions of the South Australian curriculum.
Tasks include:
- Demonstrating an understanding of and performing movement concepts.
- Presenting assignment work in multi-modal formats.
- Analysing and reflecting on learning and performance
- Group discussions and problem solving activities
