Stage 1 Biology – Organisms and Infectious Disease
SACE CREDITS: 10 credits
KEY CONTACT: Ruby Kuschel and Abby Macpherson
RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND: Satisfactory completion of Year 10 Science.
COURSE CONTENT:
Biology is the study of living things – their structure, function, origin and distribution. This semester of biology covers two main topics:
Multicellular Organisms
In this topic, students investigate how cells, tissues, organs and organ systems work together in humans, animals and plants. They explore the structure and function of body systems, factors that affect plant growth and photosynthesis, and how biotechnology is improving health and medical treatments. Students also examine ethical issues related to health, lifestyle choices and organ donation.
Infectious Diseases
In this topic, students investigate how infectious diseases spread and how the immune system protects the body from pathogens. They explore the role of vaccinations, biotechnology and disease treatments, and examine how diseases impact individuals, populations and communities. Students also consider the ethical and social challenges involved in preventing and controlling disease.
This subject provides students with the recommended background knowledge for Stage 2 Biology.
ASSESSMENT:
Assessment types
1. Investigations folio (including one deconstruct and design investigation, and an essay exploring connections between science and society)
2. Skills and applications tasks (topic test and an exam)
