Stage 1 General Mathematics A & B
SACE CREDITS: 10 or 20 credits
KEY CONTACT: Sam Eager
RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND: Year 10 Mathematics.
COURSE CONTENT:
General Mathematics extends students’ mathematical skills in ways that apply to practical problem-solving. A problem-based approach is integral to the development of mathematical models and the associated key ideas in the topics. These topics cover a diverse range of applications of mathematics, including personal financial management, investing in the share market, measurement, the statistical investigation process, modelling using linear and non-linear functions, and discrete modelling using networks and matrices.
Topics studied in semester 1 include:
1. Measurement
2. Investing and borrowing
3. Linear and exponential functions and graphs
Topics studied in semester 2 include:
4. Statistical investigation
5. Matrices and networks
6. Open topic: shares and investments
ASSESSMENT:
Assessment at Stage 1 is school-based and the following assessment types enable students to demonstrate their learning according to the SACE performance standards.
Assessment Types
1. Skills and applications tasks (3 per semester)
2. Mathematical investigation (1 per semester)
COMPLETION OF THIS SUBJECT LEADS TO: Stage 2 General Mathematics or Stage 2 Essential Mathematics.
SUBJECT COSTS:
It is recommended that students purchase a TI-84 Plus C graphics calculator: approximate cost $200.
