Year 9 IGNITE Languages
Year 9 IGNITE students must continue with their language of study begun in year 7, being either Japanese or Spanish.
Spanish
Year 9 IGNITE Spanish is designed for students with high intellectual potential. By the end of year 9 students should be able to communicate in Spanish about houses, restaurants, hobbies, holidays, and famous Hispanic people. Students should be able to conjugate the regular and irregular verbs in the present tense as well as the two key past tenses – the preterit and imperfect. Cultural aspects relating to the topics are woven throughout the course such as how to order in food in a Spanish restaurant and about historical Hispanic figures such as Salvador Dalí and Frida Kahlo. An opportunity to visit a Spanish restaurant is also possible this year.
Topics covered in Year 9 IGNITE are: Holidays, Biographies, Housing, weather, food, Recreation and Festivals.
Japanese
Year 9 IGNITE Japanese is designed for students with high intellectual potential. By the end of year 9 students should be able to communicate in Japanese about invitations, restaurants, housing, school and weather. Students should be able to read and write in both hiragana and katakana and begin to replace some hiragana words with Kanji. Cultural aspects relating to the topics are woven throughout the course such as how to order food in a Japanese restaurant and a what a typical school day is like in Japan. An opportunity to visit a Japanese restaurant is also possible this year.
In Year 9 IGNITE the emphasis is on the formal learning of Kanji.
Topics covered in Year 9 IGNITE are: Invitations, Festivals, Housing, School, Weather and Japanese restaurants.
ASSESSMENT:
The Japanese and Spanish IGNITE courses are assessed against the 9/10 achievement standards of the Australian Curriculum for Languages. Assessments tasks include a mixture of reading, listening, writing, speaking in Japanese/Spanish and reflecting on students own and Japanese/Spanish culture. These IGNITE courses extend students by incorporating cooperative learning, critical and creative thinking skills as well as real-world application to their learning.
