RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND:
Completion of Year 10 Music or by audition/interview with Senior Leader – Director of Music and The Arts. Stage 1 Music is a comprehensive course combining performance, theory, and musical literacy for students with a foundation in music.
COURSE CONTENT:
This course develops skills in traditional, classical and/or jazz idioms of music. Students attend weekly instrumental lessons with an accredited teacher, maintain instrumental practice and present solo and/or ensemble performances. Students develop musical literacy through the study of theory, aural, harmony, critical analysis and arranging.
Music provides opportunities for the development of students’ creativity, critical thinking, persistence, resilience, self-discipline, identity, connection and confidence. This is achieved through experiences that encourage collaboration and creative problem-solving, the acquisition of skills, knowledge, and understanding, and the development of aesthetic awareness.
ASSESSMENT:
Assessment at Stage 1 is school based. Students will be assessed against the SACE Stage 1 Music Performance Standards. Students will provide evidence of their learning through seven assessments. Each assessment type will have a weighting of at least 20%.
Students will undertake:
- At least two creative works (eg performance, arrangement)
- At least one musical literacy task (eg musicianship test, reflection/analysis)

SUBJECT COSTS:
There is no cost for this subject, however students require an instrument. Students who do not have an instrument will need to hire one. Please note that the school has a range of instruments (other than percussion) available for hire at $50 per term.
