Year 9 Health and Physical Education

COURSE CONTENT:
Year 9 Health and Physical Education provides students with the opportunity to build on the Health and Movement concepts developed in Year 7 and 8 Health and Physical Education. Students develop health literacy skills to support the health and well-being for themselves and others. They investigate sport and movement concepts at a deeper level and learn how to use physical activity in the improvement of performance, participation and inclusion.
Topics covered are:
Health and Wellbeing A: Students will learn about mental and emotional health and where to seek help. Topics include Resilience, Stress, Depression, Seeking Help, Supporting Others, Reducing the Stigma.
Health and Wellbeing B: This unit which is guided by the SHINE SA curriculum will examine the age appropriate concepts of a sense of self, digital footprints, communication styles, trust and respect, managing relationships and break ups, negotiating consent and protective practices around sexual activity, and where to get help and support. Students will have the opportunity to analyse and reflect on the influences and risk factors in their lives that help them make informed choices. They will learn about various support systems and agencies and develop strategies that can help and support themselves and others in navigating an ever-changing world. Students develop and apply skills and knowledge to make informed decisions within their own relationships and sexual health. They will develop confidence and the ability to challenge social influences where they impact negatively on health outcomes for themselves, others, and the broader community.
Games for understanding: In this unit students will examining contributing factors that impact on participation and engagement in physical activities and games. Through an understand of and experience in the different roles needed to organise competitions and activities. They will adopt different team roles apply support structures to assist the success of the people involved within organised sporting activities.
Fundamentals of movement: In this unit, students will develop, apply, and refine a range of essential skills, selecting the most effective techniques for various physical activities. They will self-reflect on their skill development and analyse movement using biomechanics to enhance performance. Students will explore the principles of training, gaining insights into how to improve their physical fitness and health. The unit aims to enhance physical literacy, build confidence, and promote success by developing awareness of performance and selecting from a repertoire of skills, fostering lifelong engagement in physical activity.
ASSESSMENT:
Students are assessed based on the concepts, capabilities and dispositions of the South Australian curriculum. Assessment types include:
- Demonstrating the ability to improve performance, understand and apply skills, movements, tactics, and strategies in an inclusive and supportive way.
- Presenting assignment work in multi-modal formats.
- Analysing and reflecting on learning and performance.
- Group discussion and problem-solving activities.
- Participation and involvement in the organisation of tournaments.
