Year 8 IGNITE – Land Before Time
LENGTH: One term
KEY CONTACT: Amee Allison
COURSE CONTENT:
This integrated unit is designed to draw connections between the topics of geography, poetry, geology and algebra.
- In English, students look at the connection between humanity and the land, exploring the interrelationship between human habitation and natural sustainability. Students will consider the impact of setting on our understanding of story, and the way our environment defines and directs our lifestyle.
- In Humanities, students explore the formation of the natural world, and look at how human habitation has impacted these systems over time. They draw connections between human activity and consequent environmental changes, and consider sustainable habitation systems, and the implications these have on current perspectives towards urbanisation and development.
- In Mathematics, students explore how algebra allows real world problems to be represented as numerical equations. They unpack the nature of problems, identifying the known from the unknown, and practice using reason to suggest logical solutions to complex sustainability issues.
- In Science, students study the characteristics of non-living material, recognising how classification and testing systems have been developed to promote continued understanding of the natural world. Students explore the ways that scientific understanding supports practical decision making, and the importance of considering the natural environment in building and planning projects.
