Year 8 IGNITE Languages
All IGNITE students undertake one of two languages, Spanish or Japanese. Students study this language for a minimum of two years. Learning a second language has a variety of benefits. Studies have shown it improves memory, increases multi-tasking abilities and deepens the understanding of English.
Spanish
Year 8 IGNITE Spanish is designed for students with high intellectual potential. By the end of year 8, students should be able to communicate about their hobbies, daily routine, food and drink and shopping in Spanish. They should also be able conjugate reflexive verbs and irregular verbs in the present tense. Cultural aspects relating to the topics are woven throughout the course such as the concept of Tapas and La Tomatina festival. Opportunities to cook and or taste Spanish food are also possible this year.
Topics covered in Year 8 IGNITE are: Hobbies, Daily Routine, Shopping, Culture and Travel.
ASSESSMENT:
This course is assessed against the 7/8 achievement standards of the Australian Curriculum for Languages. Assessments tasks include a mixture of reading, listening, writing and speaking in Spanish and reflecting on students’ own and Spanish culture(s). Technology and higher-order thinking skills are integrated into assessments in year 8. This IGNITE course extends students by incorporating cooperative learning, critical and creative thinking skills as well as real-world application to their learning.
Japanese
Year 8 IGNITE Japanese is designed for students with high intellectual potential. By the end of year 8, students should be able to communicate about food, their hobbies and their daily routine in Japanese. They should also be able recognize and write most hiragana and katakana characters. Cultural aspects relating to the topics are woven throughout the course such as Obento and Japanese-specific sports such as Kendo and Sumo. Opportunities to cook and or taste Japanese food are also possible this year.
Topics covered in Year 8 IGNITE are: Hiragana, Katakana, Food, Hobbies, Daily Routine and Culture.
