Year 10 Legal Studies
LENGTH: One semester

COURSE CONTENT:
Students will develop an understanding of the importance of rules and laws in our society, including what is ‘the Rule of Law’ and ‘Natural Justice’. They will develop an understanding of how and why rules and laws are made and enforced. Finally, students will develop an understanding of what democracy is, and an awareness of how basic institutions support it locally and nationally. Most importantly, students will understand what laws affect them.
Excursion: A visit to the Law Courts will enable students to learn how the legal system works and how everyone is treated equally under the law.
ASSESSMENT:
Students are assessed based on the concepts, capabilities and dispositions of the South Australian curriculum. Assessment types include:
1. Media analysis
2. Case study
3. Mock trial
4. Course work – essay response, group activities
COMPLETION OF THIS SUBJECT LEADS TO:
Stage 1 Legal Studies or any other subject in the HASS area, including Stage 1 Modern History, Stage 1 Tourism or Stage 1 Ancient Studies.
