Introduction to the SACE
What is SACE?
- SACE stands for South Australian Certificate of Education.
- A qualification for entry into universities and further training that is recognised nationally and internationally.
- The SACE is flexible, and caters for learning both in and outside school.
- Students can combine study and part-time work, a traineeship or school-based apprenticeship.
- Students can receive credit for SACE subjects, Flexible Industry Programs (FIPs), community learning, and university studies.

SACE Requirements
- Students need 200 credits to achieve the SACE of which at least 70 must be at Stage 2.
- Most 10 credit subjects are studied over one semester and most 20 credit subjects are studied over two semesters.
- Students need to achieve a C grade or higher for Stage 1 requirements and a C- grade or higher for Stage 2 requirements to achieve the SACE.
South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) Stage 1
The SACE Stage 1 Curriculum is usually undertaken by students in Year 11.
At Stage 1 students undertake subjects to the value of 110 Credits, which contributes to their SACE completion.
Compulsory SACE Stage 1 Subjects
Students must achieve a C grade or better in the following subjects.
Teachers will provide a recommendation in regards to English and Mathematics.
- Exploring Identities and Futures (10 credits): Usually completed by students in Year 10. For further subject information follow the link to Exploring Identities and Futures (EIF).
- Literacy (20 credits): English. This is displayed in the compulsory section of the subject selection form. Links to the individual subjects are shown in the table below.
- Numeracy (10 credits): Mathematics. This is displayed in the compulsory section of the subject selection form. Links to the individual subjects are shown in the table below.
- Connecting Identities and Futures: At Aberfoyle Park High School, Connecting Identities and Futures is studied by all students in semester 1 of Year 11. Connecting Identities and Futures contributes 10 credits towards SACE Stage 1, and has replaced Research Practices. For further information follow the link to Connecting Identities and Futures (CIF).
- Activating Identities and Futures: At Aberfoyle Park High School, Activating Identities and Futures is studied by all students in semester 2 of Year 11. Activating Identities and Futures contributes 10 credits towards SACE Stage 2, and has replaced the Research Project as a compulsory subject in the SACE. Students must achieve a C- grade or higher. Flexible Industry Programs (FIPs) in SACE:
As part of their SACE (Stage 1 and 2), students can complete Flexible Industry Program (FIP) courses. The flexibility of the SACE means that students can achieve their SACE with a focus on a FIP. Recognition can be given for up to 150 SACE credits at Stage 1 and/or Stage 2 for a successfully completed FIP. For more information, please visit the Flexible Industry Program page.
