COURSE CONTENT:
Year 7 students who wish to commence or continue learning an ensemble instrument and participate in Year 7 Band should nominate for the full year Music Specialist subject.
Year 7 Music Specialist is a performance-based course providing students with the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, participate in Year 7 ensemble rehearsals and performances, study the theory of music, learn basic keyboard, aural and composition skills, engage in music technology projects and explore musical styles and aspects of music history through practical music-making.
Students who undertake the Year 7 Music Specialist Full Year Program learn an ensemble instrument. The school can provide tuition in the following instruments:
- Flute
- Clarinet
- Alto Saxophone
- Tenor Saxophone
- Trumpet
- Trombone
- Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello
- Percussion – drum kit, tuned and untuned
- Electric Bass
Please note that positions for strings, percussion and electric bass are very limited. In 2025 there were 64 Year 7 Music students in total, with 6 positions for Electric Bass, and 8 positions available for Percussion. The options of strings for all students is new in 2026. Preference is given to students who have been learning these instruments in primary school through instrumental lessons where the reading of traditional music notation is taught (not Tab).
ASSESSMENT:
This course is assessed against the South Australian Curriculum concepts, capabilities and dispositions.
SUBJECT COSTS:
There is no cost for this subject, however students require an instrument. Students who do not have an instrument will need to hire one. Please note that the school has a range of instruments (other than percussion) available for hire $50 per term.
