Year 10 Extension Mathematics
LENGTH: One semester
KEY CONTACT: Sam Eager
COURSE CONTENT:
Extension Mathematics focuses on complex problem solving and inquiry-based learning. It draws from a range of mathematical concepts and processes to solve problems. The course focuses on a broad discipline of mathematics, targeting areas of creativity and high-level critical thinking.
Students will work in collaborative settings to explore a range of problems and communicate their findings effectively to their peers through mathematical concepts and theories. Students will be provided with regular opportunities to learn through mathematical inquiry, by making frequent use of strategies which stimulate critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The course extends students beyond the core Year 10 curriculum into the advanced content that underpins senior mathematics, including indices, surds and logarithms; non-right-angled trigonometry; and polynomials and circle geometry.
This course is recommended for students who intend to study Mathematical Methods and/or Specialist Mathematics in the SACE.
ASSESSMENT:
Students are assessed based on the concepts, capabilities and dispositions of the South Australian curriculum.
Students will demonstrate their understanding through assessment in the following forms:
1. Skills and applications tasks
2. Guided exploration
3. Examination
