Year 8 Dance (elective)
LENGTH: One semester
KEY CONTACT: Suriya Down
COURSE CONTENT:
Students identify and analyse how the elements of dance are used, combined and manipulated in different styles and genres. They apply this knowledge in dance by making and performing. They use performance skills and choreographic devices to design movement sequences to perform to an audience. They evaluate how they and others from different cultures, times and places communicate meaning and intent through dance.
Students will develop their skills in expressing emotions through movement and explore their ability to tell a story using theatrical elements and dance as an expressive art form. Students study units that develop their dance skills including dance technique, composition and performance. They are assessed in small-group devised performances and whole-class ensemble pieces with a public evening performance. A requirement of the course is viewing a live dance performance to develop critical analysis skills and students engage with external theatre professionals to develop works and understand and experience a professional theatre surrounding.
