Stage 1 Essential Mathematics A and B

RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND: Year 10 Mathematics
COURSE CONTENT:
Students extend their mathematical skills in ways that apply to practical problem-solving in everyday and workplace contexts. A problem-based approach is integral to the development of mathematical skills and associated key ideas in this subject.
Topics studied cover a range of applications of mathematics, including general calculation, measurement and geometry and money management. In this subject there is an emphasis on extending students’ computational skills and expanding their ability to apply their mathematical skills in flexible and resourceful ways.

1. Calculations, time and ratio
2. Geometry
3. Measurement
Topics studied in semester two include:
4. Earning and spending
5. Investing
6. Statistics
ASSESSMENT:
Assessment at Stage 1 is school-based and the following assessment types enable students to demonstrate their learning according to the SACE performance standards.

2. Folio (1 per semester)
COMPLETION OF THIS SUBJECT LEADS TO: This subject does not have a recommended pathway into Stage 2 Mathematics.
SUBJECT COSTS:
It is strongly recommended that students purchase a TI-84 Plus CE graphics calculator: approximate cost $200. Second-hand models are widely available at a lower cost.
