RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND:
Successful completion of Year 10 Science is required. Successful completion of Year 10 Psychology is desirable but not required.
COURSE CONTENT:
Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour, thoughts and feelings. Psychology can be undertaken in semester 1 and 2 to make up a full year program, or can be studied as independent semesters.
Science Inquiry Skills (condensed unit): An exploration of how research is conducted in psychology with a focus on the methods, and types of data collected. Students will also learn about the ethical constraints which guide research involving humans and animals.
Lifespan psychology: studying the changes and development that humans go through from conception to death. This includes how these changes are affected by nature and nurture and the theory of development by Jean Piaget.
Psychological wellbeing: focuses on human strengths which complement traditional approaches to psychology. This topic looks at the strengths and virtues of individuals, communities and organisations which allow them to thrive. It looks at the belief that people want to lead a fulfilled life and help enhance the life of others.
Forensic Psychology (Psychology in context): Students learn about what constitutes a crime. They explore the biological and psychological explanations for offending behaviour. Students learn about rehabilitation of criminals and explore criminal profiling.
