KEY CONTACT: Amanda Chandler
RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND:
Year 10 HASS and/or Year 10 20th Century History, Year 10 Legal Studies or Year 10 Tourism
COURSE CONTENT:
In Ancient Studies students learn about the history, society and culture of ancient civilisations, which may include Asia-Australia, the Americas, Europe and Western Asia, and the classical civilisations of Greece, Rome and Egypt.
The study of Ancient Studies not only teaches students about different civilisations and where we have come from as human beings, but also enables students to consider environmental, social, economic, religious, cultural, and aesthetic factors that shape societies. Students will also learn about the methods and importance of preserving ancient sites and artefacts, the nature and impact of ethical issues faced by historians and archaeologists and how to analyse sources for their authenticity, reliability and significance.
Students will be introduced to key principles of archaeology, during which we will go on an excursion to the South Australian Museum. Whilst gaining a knowledge of Egyptian society and religion, students will complete an inquiry into an aspect of an ancient civilisation of their choice.
