COURSE CONTENT:
In Year 8 Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) students study the following four subjects:
History
Students investigate the diverse perspectives that have shaped the values, beliefs and cultures of medieval to pre-modern societies. This is achieved by considering significant events and developments in history. Specifically, students explore significant developments, events, turning points or challenge that contributed to continuity and change in the Asian-Pacific society or in Medieval, Renaissance or pre-modern Europe.
Students analyse and evaluate primary and secondary sources, forming perspectives about historical events and how they impact the modern world.
Geography
Students study the geomorphology of the South Australian local coast and its distinctive natural environment, together with its distinct meaning and significance to people and the community. They recognise the spiritual, aesthetic and cultural value of landscapes and landforms for people, including Country/Place of Aboriginal people.
Students analyse the connections between natural and built landscapes and human activity. They make decisions about how to best utilise these landscapes for positive outcomes.
Civics and Citizenship
Students study the development and implementation of laws and the importance of a legal system. They explore the importance of having a strong democracy and the influence of individuals and communities in this. Students investigate how political systems function through formal structures and processes, and informed participation across a range of civic and political roles.
Students analyse the strengths and weaknesses of different political systems and make judgement-based decisions about the optimal way to combine them.
Economics and Business
Students examine processes that individuals and/or businesses use to plan and budget to achieve short-term and long-term financial objectives. They understand that businesses and markets respond to and shape opportunities, influencing prices and workforces’ dynamics.
Students evaluate factors that impact personal and business financial decisions and make decisions-based decisions that would lead to positive outcomes.
ASSESSMENT:
Students are assessed based on the concepts, capabilities and dispositions of the South Australian curriculum.
