COURSE CONTENT:
In Year 8 HASS students study the following four subjects:
History
Students investigate the diverse perspectives that have shaped the values, beliefs and cultures of medieval to pre-modern societies. This is achieved by considering significant events and developments in history.
Developing their skills in Intercultural Understanding, Critical Inquiry and Personal and Social capabilities encourages students to interpret and contest evidence they are given or find about events and changes to societies in history.
Geography
Students study the geomorphology of the South Australian local coast and its distinctive natural environment, together with its distinct meaning and significance to people and the community.
Students learn about forces, patterns and decisions for human movement and settlement and its implications on environments and people. Students deepen their understanding of this through a school funded excursion to Hallett Cove Conservation Park and Glenelg.
Civics and Citizenship
Students study the development and implementation of laws and the importance of a legal system. They explore the importance of having a strong democracy and the influence of individuals and communities in this.
Students develop the capabilities of Critical Inquiry and Intercultural Understanding and understand how they are integral to the development of strong democracy.
Economics and Business
Students learn to make astute financial decisions for their personal and business outcomes.
They also investigate a business and develop a business plan that shows their understanding of market forces and changing business environments.
This encourages the development of the Personal and Social, Ethical Understanding and Critical Inquiry capabilities.
