COURSE CONTENT:
In Year 7 HASS students study the following four subjects:
History
Students engage with diverse sources of evidence that provide insight into historical contexts and their implications for the contemporary world. They explore Australia’s First Nations Peoples, one of the world’s oldest continuous cultures, examining culture, beliefs and values.
Students learn about expansions, conflict and contact between ancient societies and the influence this had on those societies internally as well as externally. They investigate how ancient societies are a construct of human systems, significant individuals and traditions, influenced by place. Students develop questioning and research skills, whilst forming perspectives about historical issues.
Geography
Students investigate natural resources and their availability and sustainability. This is done through studying the living world, examining not only availability of these resources but also the economic, and social impact on places and their continued liveability for people.
They learn that water and other natural resources shape environments and perceived value determines their management. Students also investigate that the perception of liveability is based on assessment of desirable attributes which can be enhanced.
Students develop decision making skills about where people live and the choices society makes about resource allocation.
Civics and Citizenship
Student’s study government and democracy, laws and citizens and citizenship, diversity and identity. They focus on Australia’s constitution and how it shapes democracy, how the legal system aims to provide justice, and diversity, identity and social cohesion. Students are encouraged to recognise how values based on freedom, respect, fairness, and equality of opportunity can support social cohesion and democracy within Australian society.
Students develop analytical skills when investigating how laws and rules are made and whether they are fair and necessary
Economics and Business
Students develop their understanding of the relationship between consumers, producers and businesses, and how they interact in the market. They explore the world of work and income, and examine the factors that contribute to entrepreneurial success. Students understand that businesses exist in diverse forms and entrepreneurs adapt innovatively to consumer needs and preferences. They recognise that entrepreneurs succeed by identifying market opportunities and developing and maintaining business systems.
Students develop decision making skills whilst creating their own business idea.
