Stage 1 Specialist Mathematics
SACE CREDITS: 10 credits
KEY CONTACT: Sam Eager
RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND:
Year 10 Mathematics, and Extension Mathematics
Please note that Stage 1 Specialist Mathematics must be chosen in combination with Stage 1 Mathematical Methods A, B and C.
COURSE CONTENT:
Mathematics at Stage 1 builds on the mathematical knowledge, understanding, and skills that students have developed in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability during year 10.
Stage 1 Mathematics is organised into topics that broaden students’ mathematical experience and provide a variety of contexts for incorporating mathematical arguments and problem-solving. The topics provide a blending of algebraic and geometric thinking. In this subject there is a progression of content, applications, and level of sophistication and abstraction.
Key concepts from Extension Mathematics in the Australian Curriculum required for the study of Stage 1 Mathematics, Stage 2 Mathematical Methods, and Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics have been incorporated into the relevant topics.
In this course you will use technology to do mathematical modelling, graphing and statistical analysis.
Topics studied in Stage 1 Specialist Mathematics include:
1. Vectors
2. Further trigonometry
3. Introduction to mathematical induction and complex numbers
ASSESSMENT:
Assessment at Stage 1 is school-based and the following assessment types enable students to demonstrate their learning according to the SACE performance standards.
Assessment types
1. Skills and applications tasks (3 per semester)
2. Folio investigations (1 per semester)
COMPLETION OF THIS SUBJECT LEADS TO:
Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics, Stage 2 Mathematical Methods, Stage 2 General Mathematics or Stage 2 Essential Mathematics.
SUBJECT COSTS:
It is strongly recommended that students purchase a TI-84 Plus C Graphics Calculator: approximate cost $200.
