Year 7 IGNITE Languages
All IGNITE students undertake one of two languages, Spanish or Japanese. Students study this language for a minimum of two years. Learning a second language has a variety of benefits. Studies have shown it improves memory, increases multi-tasking abilities and deepens the understanding of English.
Spanish
Year 7 IGNITE Spanish is designed for students with high intellectual potential. This course does not require presumed knowledge of Spanish but does move at a faster pace and is more in-depth than mainstream Spanish. Students who have studied Spanish in primary school, will receive extension where necessary. At the end of year 7, you should be able to communicate in Spanish about yourself, your family and your school. You should also understand how basic grammar works e,g, conjugating the present tense and have a better understanding of Spanish-Speaking countries and their culture.
ASSESSMENT:
This course is assessed against the 7/8 achievement standards of the Australian Curriculum for Languages. Assessments tasks include a mixture of reading, listening, writing and speaking in Spanish and reflecting on students own and Spanish culture(s). This IGNITE course extends students by incorporating cooperative learning, critical and creative thinking skills as well as real-world application to their learning.

Japanese
Year 7 IGNITE Japanese is designed for students with high intellectual potential. Students share information about their personal worlds. They interact with one another in shared activities, negotiations, games and events, using modelled language to ask and respond to familiar questions, give and respond to instructions. They obtain factual information and identify key points from different sources, using non-verbal and contextual clues to help make meaning. They also make connections and comparisons between elements of the chosen language and culture and their own, identifying how languages reflect ways of thinking and behaving.
Topics covered in Year 7 IGNITE Japanese are: Greetings, Family, School, Language Use and Culture.
ASSESSMENT:

Technology and higher-order thinking skills are integrated into assessments in year 7.
