Year 8 IGNITE – Deep Impact
LENTGH: One term
KEY CONTACT: Amee Allison
COURSE CONTENT:
This integrated unit is designed to draw connections between the topics of measurement, narrative writing, government systems and physics.
- In English, students will study the genre of science fiction and how it is used as a means to suggest possibilities and explore the implications of changes to our world. Students will consider the importance of lore in the formation of narrative worlds, and consider the basis on which fictional environments are influenced by the belief of those within.
- In Humanities, students explore government systems, considering the influence of ideas and values such as democracy and the sanctity of human life. Students explore the connection between the government systems and quality of life, and debate whether such systems promote or restrict freedom.
- In Mathematics, students consider the degree to which all things can be measured. They experiment with estimation and scaling, and determine outcomes based on the combination of different rates to solve complex problems. Students consider the area impact of a world-changing event, drawing on a range of mathematical concepts to develop and pursue an independent mathematical inquiry.
- In Science, students consider the relationship between energy and the physical world, investigating the impact of force, kinetic energy and the way energy transforms through physical movement and objects. Students will explore a scenario involving threat of a world-changing force, and experiment with different methods to absorb, divert or dissipate the energy.
