IB Language and Literature Studies
LENGTH: One year
KEY CONTACT: Ryan Brown
COURSE CONTENT:
For students interested in pursuing literary studies in year 12, Language and Literature Studies is a preparatory program examining literature, interpretation and analysis. The subject explores a wide range of texts, building skills in critical analysis, perspective taking and transformative expression. Students examine texts in depth, and consider how different lenses, such as psychological, cultural, historical or feminist lenses, impact the way texts are interpreted and ideas are expressed. The subject has a strong focus on building analytical skills, which are valuable in the application of numerous subjects and career pathways.
Throughout the course, students will engage in a wide range of different text types, including film, novel, poetry, and short literary texts. The selection of texts is deliberately broad, representing different countries, cultures and worldviews in order to build wider perspective and stimulate discussion and engagement. If you enjoy analysing novels, films, poems and other forms of literature in English, then this subject is for you.
The subject awards students the compulsory literacy requirement for SACE Stage 1, and can be taken in place of English or Essential English. The subject is also recognised as a year 1 equivalent to the IBDP program, allowing transition into Year 2 Language and Literature in year 12.
