Year 7 IGNITE Music Specialist
LENGTH: Full year
KEY CONTACT: Steve Kammermann
RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND:
No prior knowledge or experience playing a musical instrument is necessary.
COURSE CONTENT:
Year 7 IGNITE Music Specialist is a performance-based course providing students the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, participate in Year 7 ensemble rehearsals and performances, study music theory, learn basic keyboard, aural and composition skills, engage in music technology projects and explore musical styles and music history through practical music-making.
Students who undertake the Year 7 IGNITE Music Specialist Program learn an ensemble instrument. The school can provide tuition in the following instruments:
- Flute
- Clarinet
- Alto Saxophone
- Tenor Saxophone
- Trumpet
- Trombone
- Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello – continuers only)
- Percussion – drum kit, tuned and untuned*
- Electric Bass
Please note: that positions for percussion and electric bass are very limited. In 2023 there were 75 Year 7 Music students in total, with 6 positions for electric bass, and 8 positions available for percussion. Preference is given to students who have been learning these instruments in primary school (not tab).
Students identify and analyse how the elements of music are used in different styles and apply this knowledge in performances and compositions. They evaluate musical choices from different cultures, times and places and communicate meaning as performers and composers.
Music Specialist provides opportunities for the development of students’ creativity, critical thinking, persistence, resilience, self-discipline, identity, connection and confidence. This is achieved through experiences that encourage collaboration and creative problem-solving, the acquisition of skills, knowledge and understanding, and the development of aesthetic awareness.
ASSESSMENT:
Students will be assessed against the Australian Curriculum (Music) achievement standards. Assessment tasks include ensemble performances, progress in instrumental technique and music theory tests and/or assignments.
SUBJECT COSTS:
There is no cost for this subject, however students require an instrument. Students who do not have an instrument will need to hire one. Please note that the school has a range of instruments (other than percussion) available for hire for $50 per term. More detailed information can be found in the 2024 Music brochure.
