Year 8 IGNITE Health and Physical Education
LENGTH: One semester
KEY CONTACT: Anita Sharrad
COURSE CONTENT:
In Year 8 IGNITE HPE students develop aspects of health and physical activity for overall health and wellbeing. Students are encouraged to be physically active, consider the benefits of physical activity for regular sustained exercise, make better choices in relation to their and others personal health and consider changes in relationships and identities and how to manage these changes.
Topics covered are:
Movement Analysis/Athletics: In this unit students are involved in a range of athletic activities and are asked to choose one to focus on. Using technology students record themselves completing an athletic event of their choice. Using this video/picture they compare their performance to that of an elite performer in that event. They must discuss the similarities and differences in technique and discuss how cues/feedback can help to improve their performance.
Risk & Safety – looking after one another: Students explore how the changes and transition that occur during adolescence impact on their self-concept, the values that drive them and how these can influence decision making and risk-taking behaviour.
Healthy Lifestyles: Students examine the questions: What is a healthy lifestyle? How can I improve my lifestyle? Students are also taught about lifestyle risk factors and prevention of chronic disease.
Teaching Games for Understanding: Students participate in activities based on invasion games, net games and hitting/fielding games. Students are expected to demonstrate active participation and contribution to the team environment in all activities and to practice, apply and transfer movement concepts and strategies.
Sexual Health and Relationships: This unit works through the SHINE SA program and covers specific topics such as Gender and Identity, Sexual Activity including Safe and Unsafe Practices, and Sexualised Imagery.
